Chris Dudley Tells Mayor Daley "I'm Ready To Defend Our Jobs, Our Workers, And Our Businesses"LAKE OSWEGO – Today, Chris Dudley sent the following letter to the Honorable Richard Daley, Mayor of Chicago, in response to his remarks stating that he will “be out in Oregon enticing corporations to relocate to Chicago†(Frank Spielman, “Daley Wants to raid Pacific Northwest talent, Chicago Sun Times, 01/28/09): following the passing of Measures 66 and 67:
Dear Mayor Daley,
I have followed with interest your recent statement about coming to Oregon to steal our jobs and businesses. If you pursue this idea, rest assured you will find me ready to defend our jobs, our workers and our businesses. Having spent 16 years in the NBA, l know how to block shots and play defense and I am looking forward to a little one-on-one with you to protect and defend Oregon’s future. If the current crowd in Salem won’t stand up for Oregon – I will.
More important, if elected Governor, I will change the business-as-usual policies and failed leadership in our State Capitol that created this mess and made you think you could succeed at stealing our jobs, workers and businesses in plain sight.
Yes, Oregon voters recently made a decision to raise taxes on businesses and individuals. I opposed the tax increases. In the long-term I believe these tax increases leave our economy worse off and our budget and funding for schools no better off. To those who supported or opposed the tax measures, simply running in place – maintaining the status quo – should be no cause for celebration by anyone in Oregon. We can do better. We must do better. And if I am elected Governor, we will do better.
Worse than a budget deficit, we have a leadership deficit, imagination deficit and change deficit in Salem. Our politics and government have grown stale at the hands of insiders and career politicians who put partisanship and rigid ideology ahead of common sense and cooperation.
If elected, I will be the people’s Governor – not the government’s Governor. I will be the jobs Governor, the change Governor. I will veto the runaway spending and bridge the partisan divide that gave birth to ballot measures 66 and 67 in the first place. I will change state policies to create more tax-payers – not just more taxes. I will change government’s attitude toward businesses away from “can you spare a dime?†to “how can we help?â€. And I will make Oregon’s system of universities and colleges more than just a great place to learn, I will make them the idea and job factories of tomorrow. Nike calls Oregon home not because some government official recruited them here, but because Oregonians with big ideas and bigger dreams went to school here. The Nike story is just the most well known, but it represents thousands of other Oregon businesses large and small.
This November, Oregon’s future is on the ballot. I’m running because we need to move Oregon forward, not backward to the business-as-usual policies and people that created the mess we're in today. So, Mayor Daley, how about it…a little one-on-one?

Oregon needs a fiscal manager that does not feel the need to soap box on special interests and can defend with intelligence his decisions to direct the departments under his control.
I wish I knew who that was today, but Dudley spooks me for sure.
Why the hell is this guy sending a letter that is clearly intended to be a campaign statement to solicit votes to the mayor of Chicago.
I think this is a bad move. It looks like what it is, posturing without substance.
Daley doesn't vote in Oregon, so educating him about what Oregon needs doesn't mean jack.
Educating the people that Oregon can only expect to see more and more of actions like Daleys so long as we keep raising taxes might mean something. If Dudley wanted to do something substantial he would get out and talk directly about it. Not do this back handed letter to the editor stuff.
Hey...he should fit right into the conservative Republican mainstream.

Of course, the current idiot holding the office of Governor hasn't said a word has he? Doh!
Um, are you aware this blog is affiliated with Cascade Policy Institute? All they do is promot public policy from an individual liberty perspective in Oregon.
A lot of the articles on this blog were written by staff of Cascade Policy and plenty of the comments that appear are by them as well.
So many people here have as their very job that which you say none do.
In addition there were plenty of people here recently who wrote articles and commented who were involved in trying to get measure 66 and 67 defeated.
Not everyone wants to run for governor. For myself, this is simply something to do either in between machine runs or as a break from programming. Frankly I would consider doing nothing at all to be more of a positive effort for Oregon than those who worked to protect the union pay raises in the middle of a recession.
WARNING - THE PHRASE "A LOT" OR THE WORD "PLENTY" OR SIMILAR SHOULD NOT BE TAKEN TO MEAN THE SAME AS THE WORD "ALL".
All I see here is a guy who a wishy washy Republican that going to continue the same economic mistakes of the pass in the name of letting Democrats and unions walk over you.

More importantly; The New Oregon Wealth Tax. I've been searching voraciously and am surprised the no one has been discussing the Exemption from the New Oregon Tax.
Has nobody notice the big glaring EXEMPTION that is available so these "HIGH INCOME" ($125k a year) business owners and these outrageously arrogant corporations can avoid paying this New Oregon Wealth Tax?
Maybe not all, but many of these business owners can qualify to avoid this tax, in fact they may be able to pay even less that previously expected because of the exemption.
While I am celebrating that the backs of business owners won't be broke trying to support the wasteful spending habits of the politicos that hold your childs education as ransome everytime they want to spend more than is available on their pet projects or to pad the wallets of their friends, or simply because they are too "involved" to actually be frugal with their spending habits, others may be at least disappointed that knowledgeable business owners can adapt to these new inconveniences.
If you are in the claimed 3% that will shoulder this 700 million dollar padding for the Legislature ask your accountant about the New Oregon Tax Exemption.
