The rumor mill is abuzz with the latest Secretary of State candidate. This time it falls on State Senator Rick Metsger (D-Welches). It is hard to gauge because last cycle he flirted with a governor’s run. A Metsger run does have intriguing possibilities. Currently there are two other Democratic Primary Challengers, Sen. Vicki Walker (D-Eugene) and State Senator Kate Brown (D- Portland). Metsger has a starkly better voting record on taxes and small business issues than both Brown and Walker, which might make him appealing to the business community and trade groups which are dying for a more favorable candidate.

A three way could create an interesting split in the primary.

As is commonly known, the next Secretary of State will play a vital role in Oregon's 10 year re-districting formula. The stakes could not be higher.

Sen. Metsger ran a monthly humor newsletter in the State Capitol, and he has been appearing in the Dorchester skits (Republican convention). This dude has been aching for things bigger than his office. Question comes down to timing. A busy primary makes it more likely that anyone could win.

If it means they have to give up their current seats then I encourage all the State Congress Reps. and Senators to run for higher office :-)

Over the last three years I have worked around Senator Metsger. I can honestly say that he is one of a few Democrats that represent Democrats AND Republicans equally.

Metsger is a practical, common sense, moderate who will stand strong for what is right, regardless of what special interests groups think.

It would be very exciting to see him run for Secretary of State.

I hope they all run and all lose.......................pipe dream yes, but I do not see another solution to Oregons issues.
